The Supervisor of Athletics and Physical Education serves as the regional expert in athletics, health, and physical education. This role reinforces interscholastic athletics as an integral component of the educational program, promoting lifelong fitness, character development, leadership, and overall student well-being, while overseeing and providing extensive support to the effective implementation and operational management of interscholastic athletic programming across 36 sport offerings.

 

PRIMARY PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the region with best practices in advancing interscholastic athletics as an integral extension of the K–12 physical education curriculum.
  • Design and deliver high-quality, tiered professional learning opportunities for athletic administrators and NYSED-certified coaches that align athletic programming with physical education standards and instructional best practices.
  • Build and supervise a team of expert consultants and coaches to strengthen athletic program development, NYSPHSAA compliance, and sustainability across member districts.
  • Develop, organize, and disseminate instructional resources that position athletics as an educational extension of physical education, supporting program quality, safety, and continuous professional growth.
  • Expand and oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive Athletic Director mentoring program to support new administrators aligned to the evolving needs of interscholastic athletics and athletic administrators, and to reinforce the role of athletics within the broader educational framework.
  • Collaborate with athletic administrators, school leaders, consortium partners and NYSPHSAA staff to coordinate programming that advances the academic, social-emotional wellness, and physical development of student-athletes across the region.
  • Serve as a resource to the Professional Learning Health & Physical Education Consortium, ensuring alignment between athletics, physical education, and health education initiatives.
  • Participate in state-wide and other professional meetings as requested by the Director.
  • Assist with the implementation and expansion of the Section One Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT), a comprehensive leadership initiative designed to cultivate leadership skills, accountability, peer mentorship, and student voice across member schools.
  • Assist with the design, coordination, and delivery of a comprehensive Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) program that provides structured leadership curriculum and experiential learning opportunities aligned with NYSPHSAA initiatives and Section One sportsmanship standards, while intentionally enhancing student-athlete voice, inclusion, and representation across the Section.
  • Assist with facilitating regular SALT leadership meetings, workshops, regional summits, and initiatives.
  • Partners with coaches, athletic directors, and school administrators to align leadership initiatives with departmental missions, values, and strategic priorities while reinforcing positive sportsmanship and character development.
  • Serve as the lead administrator responsible for the planning, oversight, facilitation, and evaluation of all NYSPHSAA Regional Tournaments.
  • Coordinate inter-sectional communication and collaboration among athletic administrators, sport chairs, officials, host sites, and other key stakeholders to ensure seamless and high-quality tournament execution.
  • Oversee staffing, supervision assignments, and operational leadership teams to support efficient postseason event management.
  • Coordinate championship logistics for individual sports, including, but not limited to, hotel accommodations, transportation contracts, team and participant meal plans.
  • Represent the region and attend NYSPHSAA Sport Committee meetings and participate in NYSPHSAA Sub-Committee meetings as directed.
  • Provide supervisory oversight of designated staff within the Center for Interscholastic Athletics.
  • Fulfill other duties at the direction of the Director of Interscholastic Athletics.
