Job Description

Southern Westchester BOCES is seeking a visionary leader to serve as Building Principal in the Center for Special Services. SWBOCES Center for Special Services, whose core values are service, integrity, equal opportunity, and access for all. This position serves the diverse needs of special education students in a supportive and therapeutic setting, emphasizing social and emotional skill development and providing rigorous instruction aligned to the NYS Learning Standards.

 

PRIMARY PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Leadership:

• Serve as the instructional leader of the building team guiding data driven decision making, the building of inclusionary practices and full continuum of services, as well as transition planning for all students.
• Build a positive school culture that aligns with the SWBOCES Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals.
• Support on-going work towards the SWBOCES goals of developing shared language around instructional process and planning and building a connected learning environment.
• Work collaboratively with teachers and clinical staff to identify individual learning needs of all students.
• Ensure the implementation of all students’ Individual Education Plans
• Lead and facilitate instructional planning based on the implementation of the Next Generation Learning Standards in all classes.
• Support and coach instructional staff in developing differentiated, rigorous lessons designed to meet the needs of all learners.
• Collaborate with instructional staff on the use of assessments and additional data to inform instructional decisions and planning.

 

Leadership and Administration:

• Effectively manage a range of administrative responsibilities.
• Develop and maintain an efficient  master schedule which provides required and elective courses.
• Participate in the hiring process of building-level and center-wide staff.
• Institute appropriate actions to ensure that program facilities are safe, and conducive to learning.
• Prepare and complete required paperwork ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
• Share supervision and administration of Extended School Year (ESY) programs.

 

Supervision and Evaluation of Staff:

• Manage and support building-level personnel.
• Ensure compliance with New York State Standards and Commissioner’s Regulations, Board Policy and collective bargaining agreements.
• Evaluation of both certificated and non-certificated staff.
• Collaboratively identify and plan for the provision of  the professional development needs of all staff.
• Coordinate the training required for implementing curriculum and assessment in compliance with current NYSED and federal requirements.

• Program Development and Growth:

• Collaborate and participate in the Intake Process for potential students.
• Develop programs based on federal and state mandates as well as emerging district needs.
• Identification of programmatic needs and develop programs accordingly.

• Student Management and Assessment:

• Development of positive relationships with students.
• Work collaboratively with staff, families, component districts and consultants to build individual plans for the success of each student.
• Creation of a school culture that values and supports all students in a safe and structured learning environment.

• Communication and Collaboration:

• Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, component district personnel and other agencies.
• Establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with a range of constituents to meet the needs of our students and other clients.
• Collaborate with fellow Principals and other administrators.

Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

• New York State Certification – School Building Leader (SBL)
• Special Education Certification or equivalent experience in Special Education.
• Knowledge and experience in the Part 200 Commissioners’ Regulations and the CSE process.
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of the continuum of Special Education Services and Disability Classifications.
• Excellent written, speaking and listening skills.
• Instructional Leadership experience.
• Documented experience demonstrating strong student management skills.
• Knowledge and understanding of Therapeutic Interventions, Restorative Practices and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
• Thorough knowledge of the Next Generation Learning Standards, including differentiation strategies to meet the needs of Students with Disabilities.
• Up-to-date knowledge of graduation pathways and options for all students.
