Job Description

The Southern Westchester BOCES Center for Professional Learning and Curriculum Support is seeking a Supervisor of the School Library System to join our team. The ideal candidate is an experiences School Librarian or School Library Media Specialist who will bring an open and innovative mindset, a deep belief that all children can learn, and excellent organization, communication, and project management skills to coach and provide professional learning and strategic support to librarians and teachers throughout the Southern Westchester region. An integral member of our team, the Supervisor of the School Library System is passionate about professional learning and thrives in a collaborative team environment. The successful candidate possesses a deep knowledge of emerging technologies to enhance teaching, learning, and leading for our current and future school and district partners through their school library.

 

PRIMARY PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead an innovative and accomplished school library system comprising thirty-two member school districts and a $1.8M annual operating budget with a focus on building capacity in school libraries.
  • Plan, develop, and deliver high quality library services that are accessible to all librarians, teachers, and students.
  • Establish a process of ongoing review, assessment and improvement of library programs, resources and services that will evolve along with district, school, educator, and student needs and expectations; identify and develop new capacity-building educational services and programs in response to the unique needs of schools and school districts.
  • Lead in identifying, selecting, and implementing learning technologies; curate, create, and disseminate instructional resources and materials to support teaching and learning.
  • Maintain an interlibrary loan program and an updated union catalog.
  • Gather relevant data and complete the School Library System annual state report.
  • Implement the NYSED-approved Five Year Plan of Service and other system and Center goals.
  • Realize SLS CoSER programs including Online Information Services
  • (Databases), Media Resource Services, Automated Library Systems & Digital Library Collection, and Arts in Education.
  • Plan and facilitate user group meetings, SLS Library Council, Communication Coordinators, and SLS Conferences.
  • Expand our newly launched Arts in Education (AIE) program by developing relationships with AIE vendors and assisting schools and districts in matching AIE programming with school/district goals.
  • Assist school librarians in creating inclusive learning environments and addressing equity gaps in library, media, and arts education.
  • Identify and develop new capacity building library services and programs in response to the unique needs of schools and school districts.
  • Develop and lead innovative professional learning across formats (in person, hybrid, synchronous, and asynchronous) for PK-12 librarians and educators with an emphasis on inquiry, selecting high-quality, culturally responsive curriculum resources, and building partnerships between librarians and classroom teachers.
  • Co-construct library curriculum that promotes interdisciplinary learning where librarians work side-by-side with classroom teachers and students.
  • Use data to inform program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Develop and manage the School Library System budget; seek and secure grants from federal, state, and private funding sources.
  • Participate in state-wide and Center-wide meetings throughout the year and in Board of Education presentations as requested.
  • Foster consistent SLS-focused communication to a wide audience by growing our existing digital presence (SLS website, Facebook, X, Instagram and LinkedIn) to include blogs, webinars, podcasts, etc.
  • Work closely with colleagues from across the Center for Professional Learning & Curriculum Support (PLCS) and with our larger SWBOCES to collaborate in Center-wide and program-speci?c teaching and learning opportunities.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Sr. Director, Center for Professional Learning & Curriculum Support.
Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • New York State Certi?cation as a School Library Media Specialist OR eligible for Supplemental School Library Certi?cation (12 content credits and CST completed).
  • Hold an ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science (PREFERRED) and a New York State District-Level administration certi?cation (or obtain within 3 years of hiring).
  • 5+ years of work experience as a School Library Media Specialist with experience leading professional learning and/or peer coaching (PREFERRED).
  • Possess an open and innovative mindset as a thought leader.
  • Hold a deep belief that ALL children can learn, especially when they see themselves in learning that engages them and provides opportunities for them to learn about and through multiple perspectives.
  • Committed to supporting educators who are the single most important school-based factor in the learning lives of children.
  • Working knowledge of the latest information and communications technologies and success in building professional learning around their application in PreK-12 schools.
  • Strong knowledge of AASL standards, NYSED learning standards, and curriculums.
  • Excellent teaching, coaching, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel to schools and districts throughout the region and occasional state-wide meetings.
  • Strong organizational, writing, and communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively on a team.
  • Experience with inquiry-based teaching and technology integration.
  • Proficiency in engaging adult learners in a variety of instructional strategies.
  • Committed to always learning and bringing forward innovative approaches to teaching and learning with libraries.
